The 12 Apostles @ daybreak

Id made it out of Melbourne, along the Great Ocean Road, Id ducked my head as I went under the surfers greeting sign of entry to the great surfing coast. Cruising along through Aries Inlet, stopping to take photos and take in the fresh air, walk the cliff side tracks and dance along the beach.

I made it to Apollo Bay (200 km from Melbourne) and stayed in this wonderful place for 3 days. One short walking trip out to Mariners Falls just after the rainfall and another fantastic afternoons beach trekking in the Otways on my way to where-ever I found myself.

I found myself at the Apostles (282 km from Melbourne) the next day. I reached the Apostles at night. Just 10 Kilometres out of Port Campbell, I wandered down to the look out to see them there in the dark and decided to wait until dawn to see the sun rise over the southern coastline.

It was spectacular. The native birds who flew in and around the Apostles bought an element of life to these ancient rock formations that have weathered the storms of centuries to still stand majestically side by side (Including martin wrens and honeyeaters).

Although there are only eight limestone formations, the group are collectively named the Apostles. There were nine formations, created by erosion over many years and possibly as long ago as 20 million years ago, by the Southern Ocean, yet one collapsed in 2005, leaving eight remaining. Located in the Port Campbell National Marine Park which sits on the western edge of the Victorian coastline, in Southern Australia, approximately 4 hours drive from Melbourne and 5 from Adelaide.

Thankyou, it was a spectacular morning! The air cold and crisp, the bird song clear across these ancient landforms.

The Great Ocean Road Drive is absolutely beautiful, every turn shows another amazing view. The towns are great to visit so are the beaches, coffee shops and the history is so interesting. Can be done in 2 days or make it relaxing and take a week or more.

Thanks, I agree, I stayed at Apollo Bay for 3 days and that wasnt enough. There are so many fantastic things to do there - along the coast and through the Otways. Then on to the Apostles and Port Campbell, Warnambool and Portland, Bridgewater is a magical place.. then on to Mount Gambier and the Blue Lake, Millicent was my family history and Im now in Robe for 3 days.
