Quinessentially Australian

Vegemite has been described as the food of a nation. We eat it for breakfast on toast.

Many an Australian child has been bought up on vegemite on toast for breakfast, the milk at morning tea at school and the kraft cheese slice with the little mettal bit that hurt your teeth in their lunch box. Milo for after school and fish fingers for an early dinner.

Vegemite on toast for breakfast.

You will require a toaster, bread, butter, a basic table knife and a plate. Oh and the most important ingredient - Vegemite.

Place as many peices of bread that will fit or that you desire to eat in the toaster. Press the toaster button down.

Wait until your bread is a lovely golden colour.

On a kitchen cutting board, place your bread. With the knife, spread butter across your toast. Not too much.

Clean the knife end and reach for the vegemite. Dip the knife in and scoop a dollop onto your spreading knife.

Vegemite kids - again, another generation.

This may explain how deeply embedded the love of vegemite is in the australian psychi. And, I might add, how Americans dont quite understand our love of this fine food.

(please note, this video contains swear words and humor that some might find distasteful.)

Its a bit naughty, but also a bit funny

If your bored at breakfast...

If your still not sure how to spread vegemite

I think this is what Americans think vegemite is for.

If youd like some rather unique and interesting vegemite recipes, please follow the link below. There are many Australians who will mix vegemite with almost anything. Me, Im a vegemite on toast type of girl. None of this cheese or egg mixed in with my vegemite. I may, if persuaded and if the lettuce is finely sliced and dried, have a vegemite and lettuce sandwiche,....

Having grown up in South Africa I grew up with the South African equivalent ‘Marmite’ at the breakfast table. I just can’t get used to the taste of Vegemite so I’ll stick with my Marmite for now. Thanks for the hub

Ah a little Vegemite with Salt--what an experience. I have not had the pleasure of this addictive spread but am enamored with the Japanese B vitamin drink Lipovitan. Having it likened to spreadable beer doesn't sound too appetising but if I can lick it off rosy "cheeks" it might not be so bad. =:)

Salt my friend I have heard of vegemite but have not had the opportunity to try it. Loved those little V hats on the kids--thought they were little precursors to Devo. "On your morning toast--you must taste it, spread some butter first--you must taste it--taste it, it's good!" =:)

I've heard of Vegemite before but I've never tried it or seen it in stores here in the states. What's it made of and what does it taste like??

Fellow Aussie here so I can relate to the great taste of Vegemite. I think you have to grow up with it though and for me there is no better comfort food than hot buttered toast with that hint of vegemite! Yum.

Well, at least I know what these Men At Work lyrics mean now

I come From the Land Down Under :

"He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich"

I've never seen Vegemite here in the US, but I guess I have to give it a try if I do.
